^(First off — the layout is AI-generated. It’s pretty close to reality, but not 100% accurate. Like any room, there are limitations that just can’t be changed.)
^(Speaker placement is basically fixed (even if it’s not ideal, and the couch + TV positions have to stay as they are.))
Current setup:
- Front L/R: Monitor Audio Silver
- Centre: Monitor Audio Bronze
- Surrounds: old cheap Sony speakers (from a 5.1 HTIB set)
I’m looking to replace the Sony surrounds and found a local deal: a used (but like new) set of Cambridge Audio Minx Min12 with original stands for under $100.
Here’s the catch:
- I don’t have a subwoofer
- I don’t have space to add one anywhere
- My front speakers already produce pretty deep/heavy bass for this small room
The surrounds would be placed very close to the listening position — basically right next to ear level.
So I’m wondering:
- Can the Min12 actually work well as surrounds without a sub?
- Will they sound too thin / lacking impact?
- Would a small bookshelf speaker be too much at such close distance?
Anyone here running Min12 (or similar small sats) as surrounds without a sub? Curious about real-world experience.
Thanks!
