Hey everyone, I’m going to be in Tokyo for a few months and I want to put together a big parcel of gifts for family back home in Western Europe. I figured Japan Reddit would probably have way better ideas than I do 😅
I’m open to pretty much anything interesting, useful, fun, uniquely Japanese, or just cool to receive. Could be homeware, kitchenware, snacks, toys, stationery, clothing, cosmetics, gadgets, random convenience store finds, niche Japanese stuff, whatever comes to mind.
A bit of context on the recipients:
- 5 year old nephew who loves Mario, so I definitely want to find some good Mario stuff (but preferably not the kind of stuff they also have over there)
- Brother, around 40, very into cars and beer 😂
- Sister-in-law, around 40, honestly no idea what she likes 😂
- Parents who know basically nothing about Asia or Japanese culture
- Dad loves tech and cutting-edge gadgets, although I’m not really looking to spend thousands on disposable tech hype
I already picked up a few souvenir-type trinkets, but I’d love ideas for things that people actually end up loving or using long term.
Some things already on my radar:
- Japanese kitchen knives (hopefully no issues sending them internationally in a parcel)
- Face masks or cosmetics, although I know absolutely nothing about beauty products, maybe more cosmetics that are more fun or uniquely Japanese, like Pokémon or Hello Kitty collaborations rather than just expensive skincare
- Car-related stuff for my brother, if there’s anything compact enough to fit in a parcel 🤔
No real budget limit or theme honestly. I’m more interested in finding memorable stuff that people outside Japan wouldn’t normally come across and between the 5 of them they'll figure out who wants what.
Would love any recommendations, including specific shops, brands, Donki finds, department store stuff, weird convenience store items, regional snacks, or things that Japanese people think foreigners always overlook.
Thanks!
