Help with Leaving Existing Tenancy

Hello all,

I was wondering whether anyone had any specific advice on how to tackle this problem. We had a fixed term contract with our landlord (a multinational corporation), which was scheduled to end at the end of the month.

We recently discovered when following up with the landlord regarding moving out, that in the small print of the Tenancy Contract, there is a clause that states the landlord must receive at least two months notice prior to the end of the fixed term that you are moving out.

We did not deliver this notice (as we are unaware) and have made progress to move out. I have signed a new lease elsewhere having paid a deposit upfront, and as my other flatmate is unemployed, they are having to move out. Notwithstanding, our landlord is now saying that as our tenancy is governed by the Renters Rights Act, we have to pay until the end of the two months notice we served earlier this month (effectively extending our contract from the end of may to the middle of July) Is this correct? We both cannot afford this, and we're wondering whether anyone is in a similar position or had any advice for us.

Many thanks in advance.
