Hey
I'm a 26-year-old Indian climber planning to attempt Mera Peak (6,476m) in the next 2 years. Currently have experience in high-altitude treks (Annapurna Base Camp, Hampta Pass, Alakul Lake a couple more) and will be attempting Friendship Peak (5,289m) this season as my first proper mountaineering objective. Next will do Kang Yatse 2(6250m) and then aim for Mera Peak
Would love the community's help on the following:
- Permits & Requirements
- What permits do I need as an Indian national specifically?
- Is the process different for Indians vs other foreigners?
- Can permits be arranged on arrival in Kathmandu or must they be pre-booked?
- Any recent changes to permit fees post September 2025?
-Any base requirements? E.G should have done atleast 6000 m peak or so?
**2. Costs**
- What's a realistic all-in budget for it? (permits, guide, accommodation, gear rental)
- Any hidden costs I should plan for?
- Group vs solo — which is more cost effective? Also where can I find groups
**3. Guides & Agencies**
- Which Kathmandu-based agencies do you genuinely recommend? Looking for someone who manages everything end-to-end — permits, gear, food, camps
- How do I verify an agency/guide is legit and certified?
- Any red flags to watch out for?
- Is it safe to book directly?
- Any recommended trek groups?
**4. Best season**
- Spring vs Autumn for a first-timer — which do you recommend?
-Also roughly how many days to target Kathmandu-to-Kathmandu
Any advice from people who've done this, especially Indians who've navigated the Nepal climbing permit process, would be massively helpful.
Thanks in advance! 🏔️
