How does an archeological excavation work? Does the process I have in my story make sense?

I have a first draft, and now I am going back through and attempting to iron out all of the details. I'll preface that this is a fantasy novel, but it leans more toward urban fantasy with an early 1900's influence. So, while it is a fantastical world I would like to have some elements of realism.

I have a subplot involving a character doing an archeological excavation on elven ruins, funded by the university she works for. At some point in the story, the funding shifts and someone else from another university comes to take over for the project. The character is furious the work she has put in is going to waste and with further prompting from my main character, who is essentially an investigative journalist, does an interview detailing early findings and theorizes it was once an elven religious site.

I am incredibly nitpicky but is this at all how the archeological world functions? Is it possible to get projects swept out from under you like this and still be able to publish what you found? The point was for the two characters to "expose" the carelessness of the handling of the ruins and for the archeologist character to still get her props even though credit was going to be taken away. Is it believable?

(I am putting this in the career flair but lmk if I should change it!)

I have been in this campaign for about 2 years. We were all friends prior to starting and it's been a great time, we've had very little problems until now.

There are 6 players and the GM. 4 of the PC's are female and 2 are male. My character is a woman who comes from a small, religious town that was built as a safe haven for women. Only women live there and only women are allowed inside. I wasn't really thinking all that much about narrative implications when I made the character, my GM just presented us with some lore and I thought this place sounded like an interesting origin. Now, 2 years later, the story is taking us over to this area again and the mystery seems to be surrounding this town.

The problem is that 2 characters are male and are therefore not allowed in the city. We spent all last session on Saturday basically arguing over trying to get those characters into the town to further the investigation. My character has a ton of respect for safe haven of this town and is also a cleric and is very devoted to her beliefs. She shot down every idea of sneaking the men into the city and has been very insistent they don't come in at all. I even sabotaged a player's attempt at disguise self because I firmly believe she would not welcome men in the city and would not do anything to jeopardize what it stands for. It just would not be in her character.

There is still investigating that needs to be done in the surrounding area and we have ways of communicating if our party is separated, but everyone seemed very unwilling to split up. My party and friends were getting very frustrated with me. We argued outside of RP and they basically asked why I wouldn't cooperate and I said I am not trying to be frustrating but I am not going to act against my character, and that we needed to find other ways to going forward.

GM stayed neutral, which I think is fair, he was prepared for whatever we decided.

We ended the session before we came to a compromise. Am I being too unreasonable? Should I just put my character wishes to the side? How far can roleplay go before it hinders the game?

Edit: thank you I am very appreciative of all the feedback I have received so far, from all point of views. I am definitely not trying to be a problem player or prevent my friends from participating. We have been a pretty roleplay heavy group so far and I have played my character as sticking to her beliefs, even as she is growing as a person. I suggested multiple times in character and out of character that we should split the party as there is still a person of interest that needs to be interacted with outside of the city, so I just want to be clear that I would not be as insistent about it if it was truly all or nothing on the narrative, it feels feasible to me to split the party at this point for a brief period of time.

I think I am just going to talk to my GM about how he wants me to go forward. He was very open about expecting this to be a debate and set it up to be open about sneaking them in or splitting the party (or whatever else we could figure out), but I don't want to spend another session arguing about it.
