Crib mattress in a large playpen?

As I learned in my last post that we have to ditch the floor bed with a flame thing we had, I’m trying to find a new set up for our 5 months old baby asap. I initially wanted to fully babyproof the room and put a crib mattress on the floor, but baby proofing seems to be not so straightforward in our case. I’m now thinking of putting the mattress in a playpen (the one with just a wooden flame). I’m reading there’s an entrapment risk, but if the playpen is large enough (170cm by 170cm) for the mattress (120cm by 70cm) and the mattress is very thin (4cm), would it still be dangerous? I can’t really imagine how he would trap himself in a setup up like this, but thought I would ask your opinions here. I remember reading it once here that using a playpen would be safe if there’s enough margins between the mattress, but I can’t seem to find that post now, and I could be wrong. We don’t plan to cosleep at the moment as the baby is a great independent sleeper.

So I live in Japan, where the sleeping practices and the regulations for beds and bedding is pretty different. My baby’s nursery is a tatami room, which means we can’t put a proper crib, so we got [this floor bed thing](https://www.farska.com/product/spec/compactbedfits) from a Japanese brand. He has been sleeping in it since he was born (we room share as one of us sleep with him in his nursery), but the more I learn about the safety guidelines overseas, I’m doubting more about this bed. The mattress is firm enough, but it’s got a 7cm-high flame all around. It was advertised to prevent the baby from rolling out from the bed, but from what I read, the flame is actually unsafe as it might pose suffocating risk, am I right? The flame is made with the same material as the mattress so it‘s firm though. I’ve taken out the higher frame thing it came with, so it just has that 7cm frame all around. Since he started to roll, he sometimes hangs around over this flame, and I’m worried it might not be safe. Luckily he hasn’t done that during his sleep yet.

I’d love to keep this bed since it was pretty expensive, but what do you think? If we should get rid of it, what would you recommend? Should I just get a simple baby size mattress and put it on the tatami floor? Or an adult size mattress? I like that it will give the baby more space to roll, but I worry it might be a bit too high if the baby falls. And as his nursery is rather small, we’ll probably need to stop room sharing if we give him an adult size mattress. Thoughts?
