First time akita owner

I've had a lot of dogs that I've trained, but none as aloof/agressive as an akita is (i know that each dog will be different but just breed wise) and I've had success with training, but a lot of times, its like action reward style, like the dog does the trick, then gets pet or treats and stuff, friends keep telling me that with akitas you must be more stern and just meaner almost so they know it's not optional to listen, any tips/how i should actually be training or working with my akita?
