Hardiebacker vs Ditra for full-home wood look tile?
I am getting a general contractor for a full-home remodel and as part of it I would like large wood look tile flooring. It is a 70 year old home with crawlspace, 1600 square feet original and were adding 300 square feet in the reno. When reviewing the details of the tiling the contract says they will use Hardiebacker.
I asked about using Ditra for the uncoupling membrane because as I understand it will help prevent cracking, especially with large format tile and the small grout lines we want. My contractor said he mainly recommends Ditra closer to fault lines (we live in an earthquake risk area) but that it is unnecessary where we are. If I want it he would put Ditra over the Hardiebacker.
Does this sound right? This is going to be our forever home and I've told him that getting the flooring perfect is one of our priorities.
