Once Upon A Time At The End Of The World Review

Once Upon A Time At The End Of The World Review

Continuing to share my comicgeeks reviews here because I really enjoy some of the discussion and comments- I hope other people are too. Lmk if I'm over posting and ofc would love to hear your thoughts.

5/5

Being only my 2nd 5 star review ever, Once Upon A Time At The End Of The World has quickly ascended my all time rankings of comics. This, simply put, is a love letter to love. The highs, the lows, the work it takes to keep things going, and the hurt when it all falls apart. This is a story of 2 broken people finding each other and loving each other despite their flaws and self doubt. It does an amazing job of capturing the fundamental understanding required to love someone else and share a life together.

The setting of the story is really relatable to anyone trying to grow love, or a family, in a world that seems like it's on the brink of ending or that it's too far gone to save. It shows that no matter what is going on around you, love is always worth it simply because it matters within itself. I think the quote from the story that encapsulates it best is "you can be broken... And still make beautiful things."

Now, I need to make sure I tell my wife I love her tonight and that I am thankful for the beautiful family we've created together. This story is almost as beautiful as she is.

3/5

Below is my review from ComicGeeks for Supergirl N52 Vol 1. Yes, I will honestly still buy vol 2 when it comes out because I find myself supporting female characters (and writers) simply because my daughter is into comics and I want better representation. Also, I didn't think the art was bad I just felt like it was super standard compared to the other N52 stuff I've read.

This was an incredibly frustrating read- maybe the most frustrating of the year for me so far. I really wanted this to explore Kara's grief and immense loss far more and I was really disappointed in how they handled the pacing of the story. The first 1/3rd of the book had potential with Kara starting to adjust to life on earth. This sadly came screeching to a halt when it fell victim to a terrible crossover that lasted what felt like 20 issues. I did not like the story line with H'el (dumb name) and I felt like they stripped Kara's agency but attaching her to this random character.

I also felt like superman was really poorly written with him coming off as arrogant and like he didn't really care what happened to HIS ONLY LIVING RELATIVE. I think the relationship between Kara and Kal can be summed up in comparison to how they handled the reveal to Kara that Krypto is still alive- it literally lasted 1 panel. That sort of lack of depth and feeling was felt throughout the story and I hope we get to explore her loss, grief, and journey towards accepting Krypton's destruction in vol 2.
