I'm from Germany and one of my core childhood memories is my grandma telling me how Germanising foreign names (cities and persons) is very rude and that you must learn the original enunciation to be polite.

Consequentially this means that when I speak with a foreigner / English speaker I only use the original German enunciation when speaking about German people or cities. Which can sound kinda weird because you switch between languages for certain names but it’s also what I’d consider polite from foreigners.

Do you know any other country / people who act like this? Or is it a German thing?
