I just passed the bar on my fifth attempt, and I honestly feel… lost.
For the past three years, I’ve been working as a law clerk at an immigration firm. Immigration law wasn’t originally my goal - just where I landed. Now that I’ve finally passed, I’m struggling with what comes next.
Do I stay in immigration, where I’ve built real, practical experience? Or pivot into what I originally wanted- personal injury or mass torts - even though I have zero experience in those areas?
Starting over feels intimidating. It would mean stepping into a completely new field without internships or prior exposure, and I’m not sure how realistic that transition is - or whether firms would even take a chance on me.
For context:
I graduated in July 2023
Passed the bar in February 2026
Still have several months before admission
That timeline has been weighing on me. For a while, I had started to accept that maybe being an attorney just wasn’t going to work out, and I began exploring alternative paths like legal tech/“legal engineer” roles. Now that I’ve passed, I feel caught between paths and unsure how to move forward.
If you passed the bar after multiple attempts:
How did you navigate this stage?
Did you stay in your existing field or pivot?
What helped you make that decision?
I’d really appreciate any advice or perspective.
