Yes, he made the final step himself, but do we really think all his friends didn't contribute at all? In the end, the many times he went out during the anime wouldn't have happened had he not met Misaki or found out Yamazaki lives next door. Do we really think he would've gotten a job by the end if he had been inside his apartment the whole series long instead of connecting with others? Having people care for you does help significantly. Let's not forget connections are a good thing even if you need to make the final step yourself
