Moving to Japan for 3 months. How to break into the local scene and land gigs?
Hello my favourite people on Reddit. I’m a professional commercial and editorial photographer moving to Tokyo for a 3-month stint starting in June. I want to make the most of my time in Japan and actually "make it" there, rather than just being a tourist with a camera.
I’m looking for advice from anyone who has worked in the Japanese market or is currently based there.
I heard that Japan is very much about who you know. How to get to know people from the industry? Is cold-emailing Creative Directors or Production Houses effective, or is it a waste of time without a local introduction?
I’ve done test shoot before, I prefer not doing that anymore. But how do you built a team? Where do you find reliable MUAHs and stylists in Tokyo? Are there specific platforms/agencies for freelancers, or is it mostly IG-based?
What are the major "do's and don'ts" when dealing with Japanese clients? I’m aware of the high level of professionalism required, but are there specific etiquette rules in the studio or during pre-production that foreigners often miss?
For those who’ve done short-term gigs, how do you navigate the billing process without a long-term business visa?
If you had only 3 months to establish a presence and land at least one solid commercial gig, what would be your priority in first couple weeks?
I have a solid portfolio and I’m ready to hustle, but I want to be smart about it. Any insights on the current state of the industry in Japan would be massively appreciated.
Thanks!
