I (19f) have been unemployed my whole life, but I recently got hired part-time at a grocery store in February. This job is minimum wage and an hour and a half commute by bus, but I decided to take it because I was tired of being poor and jobless
My friend has been working at this cafe in a hospital that is connected to my university campus, and quite literally begged her managers to interview and hire me because she was aware of my commute. The pay at the cafe is better, and my university is in my city, so it would’ve been a way better opportunity for me.
The issue is, the hospital cafe is pretty picky and they haven’t hired any of the previous people my friend has referred, so she told me to lie about my availability and omit the fact that I have a full time clinical placement starting May 4th at a different hospital for my university major. During the interview, she told me it’s a casual position and I’d be working evening shifts anyway, so I didn’t think it would pose an issue even if I got hired.
I got hired two weeks ago. Amazing. Except, they have fixed timings for each shift and their lastest evening shift runs 5-10 PM which I got scheduled for. My clinical runs 9-5 and my placement is 20 minutes away, so I emailed my manager and asked if I could come in 5:30-10:30 instead. She said she could let it slide that specific day because it was technically training and asked me if I had clinical every day, which I do.
Because of this, I emailed back and asked if I could only work on weekends until my clinical ends (July 31) if I couldn’t work evenings on weekdays. This is also around the time my 3 month probation ends for the hospital.
Now. I know it was probably stupid to lie about my availability, but she hasn’t replied in over 24 hours and she usually responds pretty quickly so this is really stressing me out. How annoyed do you think she is and how likely am I to get fired?
