Hi! These two young dwarf pear trees (comice and flemish beauty) were planted from bare root 2 springs ago, and their growth has just shot up in the last few weeks. I've kept them well watered so I don't think it's wilting, but that new center growth is just too top-heavy to stay upright!
I'm worried the branches will snap when it gets heavy with fruit some day. Should I prune off the top branches now so it springs back upright as soon as possible? Or hold off any pruning until next winter's dormancy? Or tie and stake it to my shed to pull its growth back the other way? Or maybe just embrace the bendy growth and train it into a pear arbor instead?
The last pic is a comparison of my peach tree that is only 1 year older than these pears, but has had much more steady and uniform growth. Just so you know I can grow an upright tree, haha.
