Hello everybody,
As you loved my first educational series yesterday, let’s get another one
Today we will discuss the impact of the Sasanian occupation on Bahrain.
While the Sasanian Empire (224–651 AD) exerted political and military control over the region, the cultural impact remained remarkably limited, particularly regarding religious and funerary practices.
Before the Arabs reached Persia الفتح الإسلامي (the Islamic conquest) and taught the people there the proper way to bury the dead, the Persians would leave corpses naked in areas called Towers of Silence to be devoured by vultures or dogs. Have you ever heard of Bahrain witnessing such practices? the Semites inhabitants of Bahrain have a continuous history of burying their dead that predates Islam by millennia. This is physically evidenced by the Dilmun Burial Mounds, which comprise one of the largest ancient cemeteries in the world, dating back to 2050 BC..
As I mentioned yesterday, the Persians were in Central Asia and migrated to the Iranian plateau between 700 and 1000 BC. These beliefs and practices are linked to the Aryan and Zoroastrian peoples who originated in Central Asia before settling on the Iranian plateau, and their environment and culture were influenced by those practices.
This is just one example. There are no significant cultural influences, neither in customs nor in the spread of religion except for food, which naturally spread given that Bahrain was a trading center and traders came from everywhere. They even appointed local rulers because the local population did not accept foreigners.
The Sasanians often utilized local Arab intermediaries or appointed local rulers (like the Lakhmid dynasty) to manage the region, as the local population was notoriously resistant to direct foreign cultural imposition.
