When you leave your house in the morning, Cody is already waiting outside your door.
“I couldn’t sleep…” he murmurs sheepishly “figured I’d take a walk with you into town.”
You barely start the walk towards Little Rock Town when Cody stops in his tracks.
“I need to clear my head… Will you battle me?”

You spend the night camping, then pack up in the morning and head back to the lab.
As you get closer you see police vehicles and crime scene tape. Cody is sat with one of the officers, a blanket around his shoulders and a far off look in his eyes.
“Stop right there!” Officer Jenny looks you up and down “Who are you?”
You explain that you are one of Professor Socotra’s assistants, returning with field samples.
“I see.” Officer Jenny’s gaze softens “Professor Socotra was found dead this morning. I'm sorry for your loss.”
(From this point on I’m thinking of updating twice a week, possibly a little longer for posts that require more interaction.)
You wake up bright and early the next day, ready to get researching with your new partner! You head to the lab, bumping into Cody on the way, and get started prepping equipment. You spend half an hour cleaning the lab’s best microscope, ready for a day of examining samples.
Suddenly you hear a bang from the Professor’s office. As you look around the corner, you see the door is ajar and the Professor seems agitated.
“You think you can threaten me!? It’s my research, and I'll bloody we’ll choose how it gets used!”
A crash behind you gets the Professor's attention. She turns, seeing you and Cody in the lab, and pulls her office door shut.
“Shit, sorry… the beaker slipped out of my hands…” Cody looks down, ashamed “Do you think the Prof is ok?”
Not long after the mess is cleaned up, Professor Socotra emerges.
“I’ve decided to send you into the field today. We’re short staffed, and I need samples from these areas. There are pokeballs over there, I’ll even let you keep one of the Pokémon as a thanks for covering.”

The Next Day…
You and Cody have had a hard day updating charts for rock types with the Professor.
Professor Socotra sighs, wiping her forehead on her sleeve “And… that’s all the geodude weighed.”
“Thank Arceus for that,” Cody “One more and my arms might have fallen off!”
“Now that would be a tragedy.”
“So, is that us done for the day?”
“Actually, there was one more thing I wanted to discuss with you two.” Socotra turned, giving you her full attention “How would you like to start your training as field researchers?”
Cody’s eyes light up “Do you mean it?”
“It’s a lot of hard work, more so than being in the lab all day, but I think you’ve proven yourselves.”
Cody jumps excitedly “Yes! I would love that, Professor!”
“Good. You still have a lot of work to do before you’re ready for the Field, but go and see Marcy. She’ll help you choose a Pokémon.”
“Wait, we get Pokémon too!?”
Socotra rolls her eyes playfully “well duh! How do you expect to be field researchers without a Pokémon? Now off you go, before she closes up the pens for the night!”
You and Cody head out to see Marcy making her final checks.
“Ah, so you finally decide to show up!” She looks you both up and down “The prof told me to let you have your pick of the Normal type Pokémon. I’ll show you your options.”
