Reactivity training
Hi! I have rescued my dog Goose, when he was approximately 7 month old last August. He is approximately 16 months now. He is a handful of breeds (29 % husky, 27% Australian cattle dog, 19% GSD, 15% Pitt, 11% lab). My shelter required all puppy adolescents dog to go thru obedience training, so we did. Then more obedience thru winter. In February he started to get more reactive towards dogs in class , so we stopped the group classes. I do have a trainer, but I cannot afford as much private training. He started exhibiting reactivity/frustration on the leash , but very unpredictable, he really doesn’t like huskies and GSD, and dogs with chaotic energy. In winter he started to go to occasional day care for socialization and he does good there. So I assumed it is just leash reactivity. I had a bad experience with foster dog in 2022, he bit neighbor’s dog. The neighbor didn’t pursue any charges, as long as we gave him back to the rescue. But this experience really traumatized me, so I really want to fix Gooses reactivity for both of our benefits.
My main challenge that he is not very food motivated, he listens perfectly inside the house, but ignores me, and doesn’t take treats outside.
I was wondering if you can recommend any resources for a dog that is not food motivated? Any books you recommend, or online classes? What worked for you for leash reactivity? How do you socialize a leash reactive dog? Thank you!
