I’m looking to add filtration to improve our well water quality. The question is where to place the filter in the system. I plan to get testing done to identify actual filtration needs. The water was tested for safety prior to move in back in 2020, so I don’t suspect anything harmful. Currently, there is only a water softener. I plan to add the following:
-spin down filter (I know this needs to be first)
-multiple stage media filters (based on water test)
-UV filter of deemed necessary
And keep the water softener, which does a pretty good job of removing iron and sulfur smells for daily use despite not being the primary role. We also have a small RO under the sink for drinking water.
we use a lot of water due to our 9 cows, 16 goats, 7 sheep, 5 pigs, some ducks and chickens. We have had issues with the softener, and if that is not working, the water is not up to our standards for our animals and it kills the relatively expensive RO filters. So at minimum, I don’t want to bypass the softener for our outside water, but I wonder if adding multiple stage filtration before the softener would clog up the filters very fast and reduce flow rate at the spigots. Filling multiple 100 gallon buckets takes time as it is, but there is very good pressure currently, which we don’t want to lose. I don’t know the gpm but based on the time it takes to fill a 100 gallon bucket, let’s say 10+.
My goal is to improve water quality for the whole house for appliances, toilet and tile cosmetics, and ideally get good drinking water from the tap. The under counter RO could maybe be used to feed a refrigerator water system or removed. It would also be a great if my partner would drink from the tap instead of buying bottles of water. The RO water doesn’t taste good to her. Might be a farce… but I hate paying for water bottles.
