For me, Aang and Katara's friendship is better in NATLA
Although this is a bit off-topic for the group, I felt I needed to talk about it here because it's a healthy group (I'd be massacred if I talked about this in any other ATLA group XD)
I know a big part of the fandom has several criticisms regarding this live action, and while I agree with some, I really enjoyed the series, and there are changes they made that I ended up liking much more than in the animated series, the friendship between Aang and Katara being one of them.
For me, the live action proves what we Zutarians have been saying for decades: Their relationship works much better when it's just a friendship, without any focus on romance and without Katara having to babysit him.
Remember the scene where Aang enters Avatar Mode when he discovers the genocide at the Air Temple, and Katara is the only one who can calm him down? In the live action, this doesn't happen; he calms himself down because of his positive memory of Master Gyatso. And that's where NATLA won me over. That scene made much more sense to me!
In NATLA, Katara isn't Aang's emotional crutch; she's his friend, and they support each other equally. Just as Katara showed great empathy for the genocide of Aang's people, Aang also showed great empathy for the genocide of half of her people and her mother. Things don't revolve solely around one side.
Here, Katara is much more like a supportive older sister. Yes, she protects and supports Aang, but she doesn't need to act like Aang's babysitter/mother, and that relieves me a lot. I always found that so exhausting in the cartoon. Not to mention that their friendship is much better when it's focused on their emotional connection, not on Aang's crush on her. I was very relivied that they excluded that Kataang romance thing in the first season, and I really hope it stays that way in the other seasons. But, if this plot is going to be addressed, please, let it be about Aang's unilateral crush for a older girl that he overcomes in a healthy way (Like Dipper and Wendy from Gravity Falls, for example).
I truly hope Netflix don't make Kataang, and i'm not saying this just because I'm a fan of Zutara. Regardless of whether Zutara becomes canon or not in the live action, making Kataang endgame would just sound so much more forced and weird here. The live action Katara spent the entire first season acting like the older sister to a little kid, and suddenly... she's going to date that kid?
Besides the lack of romantic chemistry and all the reasons I mentioned above, it would be VERY weird to have to see an adult actress kissing a minor. I hope Netflix spares us that.
