Crystal Resonator for RC Car

Crystal Resonator for RC Car

My nephew got an RC car and remote from the thrift store, but couldn't get it to work. When I visited them, they asked if I could help get it working, so I started to tear it apart to find out why it would turn on, but not drive when commanded. I then noticed that there was a 49 mhz sticker below the car, and a 27 mhz sticker on the control. (The image is one I found online, I didn't take one of the resonator I found on the control, which had 27 mhz on it, not 49 like in the image here) I didn't pull the truck apart too much, but the remote control had this resonator in plain view, and it alerted me to the fact that you can't just flip the switch to another frequency to make it work. I found out that the Thunder Tumbler RC cars have different frequencies for different colors so you can have up to 3 in use in the same area at the same time, so I assume at some point, the truck and control were accidentally matched incorrectly. I found that the control will drive the truck if the antennae are within about an inch of each other, so I know that the control and truck work separately.

My initial thought was that I could buy a 49 mhz resonator, then just use my limited soldering skills to remove and replace the 27 mhz resonator that is in the control, and that would fix the issue. However, I cannot for the life of me find a 49 mhz resonator online that looks like the one in this image. I can however find a 27 mhz resonator on amazon.

  1. Since I didn't strip the truck down to its PCB to see what the resonator looked like, should I assume that it is the same type as the one in the control?

  2. If I solder the 27 mhz resonator into the truck will it fix the problem?

  3. Is there anywhere online that someone could suggest a place to buy a 49 mhz resonator like in the pic? My search was fruitless.

  4. I was able to find a 50 mhz resonator that looks like this, but I'm not sure if that is close enough to do the job. I mean, the frequency on the resonator in the image is 49.860 mhz, but I'm actually not certain what the freq of the truck is other than the "49 mhz" sticker on the bottom. Can I assume that it's 49.860, rather than exactly 49?

Thanks in advance for any help!
