On the first couple weeks they were growing steady and fast, but over the last two weeks the growth was minimal and the leaves looks sick.

Hello, I was cleaning the backyard but I don't have the proper tools. The weed is much shorter and I was able to remove some Roots, but the majority off them is still there. What can I do? Can I just put some cardboard on top of mowed weed and save the trees?
