
MT5 Can Sometimes Feel Archaic - BUT - It Proved Itself during the October 2025 AWS outage.
Late last year, there was a major outage across various websites including Amazon, Zoom, United Airlines, and more. This cascading event shocked the world, and according to CNN, this event effectively "took down the internet".
While no industry was spared from this massive disruption, for traders, when prices are moving and positions are open, an event like this can quickly turn into disaster.
The MT5 can be clunky at times, and we may wonder if it's obsolete in 2026, in particular when comparing to all the sleek web-based platforms out there. However, traders using installed MetaTrader 5 terminals remained largely unaffected by the 2025 AWS outage because the desktop platform runs independently of AWS infrastructure. This is a reminder that, as traders, we should rely on resilient setups that can continue operating independently of major cloud outages and not be entirely bought over by newer web-based options.
