The book starts with a teenage boy who is constantly on the move with his mother has been invited by some new friends to a sleepover, he is nervous because he gets really bad "night terrors" sometimes. Everything is fine till he falls asleep when he wakes everything has gone to hell (not literally) with the other kids wrapped up in silk cocoons (done by a demon from the 9 circles of hell).
He runs home and finds out a lady principal, with a name like Goodmagic? or something like that, has come to invite him to her school for people like him. It turns out he can create purple? portals when he has nightmares and that is why he has been invited to this magic school that's housed in a massive tree set in the Bermuda triangle students call it the tree-house.
When he gets there he finds out he can do even more he can also summon? empower? weapons with a light magic making him a "Double threat"? which is really rare, (the principal is one too?). This is revealed when he creates a really Massive portal in his first lesson that almost lets a powerful demon straight into the classroom. This is really bad because for the 9? 7? 4? rulers of hell to leave hell they need someone powerful enough to open a big enough portal, for which a "Double threat"? is needed thus they begin targeting him.
He ends up being contacted by the "Portal Police" because his dead father was suspected to have been in cahoots with one of the rulers of hell, so they try to arrest him?
I don't really remember any more details past that, except that it end with 1 demon ruler attempting to break through a portal he makes and he quickly closes the portal on his hand? cutting it off above an important bracer that functions a little like a crown for the demon ruler.

I read this book around 2010-2017 at the school library, it may have been a multi book series?, but the books were not that long. It gave Harry Potter vibes so perhaps it was written in the rush after that was released.
