Deep analysis on Behavior and Communication Score
Today I decided to analyze the Behavior Score system to find out how it works and why people get stuck at lower Behavior Score. I'm not here to say whether the system works or not, if it's fair or not, I just want to show how it works.
I exported 160 Conduct Summaries, which means, 2400 games, from end of 2023 until today. Here are some key findings:
Data clearly shows:
- The same number of reports can produce wildly different score changes.
- Sometimes I gained score despite receiving reports.
- Sometimes 1-2 reports caused massive drops.
- Once my score entered the 9k–8k range, recovery became much harder.
Now, let's deep dive into it.
When I had high Behavior (12k), reports wouldn't matter much.
Even getting reported 4 times in 2 games, Behavior Score still increased by 9 points.
At 11k, something weird happened. I got reported 2 times by 1 single party in 1 match, yet I lost 335 points. I believe here I received an extra punishment (maybe overwatch?). I'm not a griefer, but I have been sent to Low Priority 3 times since 2012. Sometimes you can get Low Priority for doing something not usual (for example, buying Midas as support or trying a different build).
2 reports from 1 single party reduced 335 points.
Between 11k and 9k, it seems I was getting punished harder for some reason.
1: punishment
1 single report reduced 344 points.
2nd punishment:
1 single report reduced 199 points.
I looked back on Opendota to see what happened on these weeks, but I couldn't find anything except this: I built a magic Clockwerk build with 5 Rapiers. We won the game, but it seems I got reported and was punished by overwatch. I did not grief the game, I was literally trying a build I saw some people doing (strong Rocket Flare damage).
Punished by trying a new build.
Although I had strong impact in the game (highest Hero Damage and Net Worth), system still punished me.
But that would not explain why I was punished 2x on the same month. I couldn't find any other game that could possibly go wrong.
Once I reached 8500 Behavior Score, things got more difficult. A single report out of 15 games increased only 20 points.
Below 8000, it got almost impossible. 2 reports reduced 76 points.
That means: 1 single bad game (2 reports) is enough to compensate 4 good games (0 or 1 report). If you get 3+ reports, you're done.
So, in a desperate attempt to climb my score, I decided to play quiet, low key, as much as I could. No key binds, no text chat, no pause, no "Well played!", "Get back!", no "Roshan.", NOTHING. Simply play the game in the hope that the system would detect I haven't communicated and not consider the communication reports, and hopefully not get reported for any other reason.
That did not help much. I was still getting random reports. 1 single mistake is enough and the system punishes you.
1 single reported match reduced 18 points. The only way to increase is to receive ZERO reports.
Currently I'm stuck in that limbo. No way to get out. Maybe playing in a party of 5? Well, first I would need to find some friends, as I mainly play solo or with my wife. I also only play Turbo mode.
Conclusion: Estimated Threshold Behavior
Based on my dataset:
| Score Range | System Behavior |
|---|---|
| 11000–12000 | Extremely forgiving |
| 10000–11000 | Mild punishment scaling |
| 9000–10000 | Noticeably harsher |
| 8000–9000 | High sensitivity |
| <8000 | Very difficult recovery |
Recovery Appears Intentionally Slow
Once my score entered the 8k–10k range:
- positive summaries gave small gains
- negative summaries caused huge losses
Typical positive recovery:
- +10 to +80
Typical punishment:
- -150 to -350
This creates a downward spiral effect.
Final Verdict
My behavior score system appears to behave like:
“Trust-based matchmaking moderation”
—not a simple report counter.
The strongest evidence from my data:
- Reports are weighted differently depending on current score.
- Excessive-report events permanently alter sensitivity.
- Recovery becomes nonlinear below ~10k.
- Communication toxicity is likely punished heavily.
- Commends have very small impact.
So, the statement that it's (almost) impossible to climb once you reach a certain threshold is TRUE.
Does that mean you will never be able to climb? NO. It can be done, but very unlikely.
