My take on Maomao and my newfound increase in respect for this media.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. I’m usually a "when and why" kind of person with media; I prefer analysing the psychological architecture of characters and the author's choices rather than just watching the plot happen.
Looking at the wider anime and manga industry, it's hard to ignore how female leads get boxed into very specific tropes. Far too often, they’re written as these angelic, unconditionally forgiving characters who just act as flowerpots. They're naively kind to a fault, sometimes purely as a trauma response to avoid being alone. Or, they exist simply as plot devices to force romantic tension. The message usually ends up relying on magical pity or convenient forgiveness while ignoring any real world consequences.
This is exactly why Maomao is built differently, and why I think she's the best-written female MC out there right now.
Maomao is top tier because she is the epitome of intellectual pragmatism. She completely rejects the standard industry mold. She doesn’t run on forced idealism; she operates with a strict, realistic moral code. If she deals with someone who is genuinely wicked or an active threat, she doesn't try to fix them with a hug or a tearful monologue. She accurately diagnoses the situation, sets ironclad boundaries, and logically outmaneuvers them. She demands actual accountability, which so many stories desperately lack.
To make it even funnier, half the time she's just in it for the fun of it. Sometimes she only gets involved because she’s morbidly curious.
What makes it even better is the structure of The Apothecary Diaries itself. The anime/light novel doesn't need a world ending plot to artificially raise the stakes. It's just about dealing with day-to-day life in a well-realized world with great characters.
Maomao actually earns her place through sheer competence. She solves life-or-death puzzles using her intellect, and she never sacrifices her grounded personality just to fit a trope. Compared to the usual anime portrayals, she is completely a breath of fresh air.
