Would you be interested in participating in an online 1,000,000 piece jigsaw puzzle ?
Hello,
I've had this idea bouncing around and I want to put it out there: a community world record attempt for the largest online jigsaw puzzle ever assembled. One million pieces, all on a single shared canvas.
I love big numbers and epic goals. I think this could make a great long-form community event, something that takes days, weeks, maybe months.
What's already been done:
- The "Million Piece Mission" (USAF, 2020) holds the Guinness record at 1.2M pieces, but it was actually 3,000 separate ~400-piece mini-puzzles stitched into a mosaic. Players never shared a single space.
- The physical world record is 551,232 pieces (Vietnam, 2011), also pre-divided into sections and reassembled.
- Existing multiplayer jigsaw platforms max out around 7,000 to 8,500 pieces and a few dozen simultaneous players. The "most concurrent solvers" record is reportedly 1,141 people.
So nobody has ever attempted a truly unified, massively-multiplayer puzzle on a single canvas.
What I'm picturing is an r/place style event, with a minimal website built just for the occasion. One big canvas, a million pieces, not chunked, not pre-sorted. The image would be community-voted before the event, and it would need to be a pretty high-resolution one.
I'm a developer so I can help on the tech side, but I'd love to find co-organizers to help out.
What are your thoughts on the project, would you be interested?
EDIT: A Discord server is now live to coordinate the project. Link in comments!
