We all know that only one person can eat a devil fruit, as stated in the Ace novels. It's also stated that the first person to ingest the devil fruit gets the power if the fruit was cut in pieces. In the top panel, it's pretty straightforward, when one person eats the fruit, the fruit on the other side becomes useless. We can simplify this as information being transferred between the pieces of the fruit.

The problem arises when we separate the people, say an infinitely large distance. If one person eats the fruit, the fruit must send information instantaneously to prevent the other person from also gaining the powers of the fruit. However, as we all know, nothing can go faster than light, so what's going on here? It's entirely possible that One Piece doesn't follow the same laws of physics as us, however that breaks everything, so we won't do that. If this is the case, the fruit can be ingested by both people before the information is received and thus both people will gain the fruit's power. This creates a paradox, it directly goes against what we've known about how devil fruits work. Is it possible that the fruit pre-determines the future holders? The Hito Hito No Mi - Model Nika is known to have a will of its own, so is that the case for all fruits?
