Hi! I'm gonna ask here because there will be more expertise on wing and high angle paddles.
My use is kayak fishing. Last season I was doing 8-12km paddling per session, I do a lot of trolling and enjoy the exercise, exploring around. So its kinda like a sea kayak touristic use I guess! Dont go too fast my bike gps I attach to the kayak to track distances done says about 4kmh speed, 7kmh if I sprint.
Right now I have a low angle paddle, its a Point65 easy tourer, alu shaft, plastic blades, I think it weights around 1200g.
For this season I wanted to change to high angle, I think it will suit me more, and I wanted to try. And inevitably come the wing paddles.
My fishing kayak is kinda like a fat "fishing surfski". Its not a super slim fiberglass stealth but its 480 by 74cm, long and narrow, fast, for current fishing kayak standards.
So I ended up coming across the main european competition wing brands... Adrio, Braca.... and Nelo (which is a maker of surfkis I believe) has this paddle made by Braca, meant for "club beginners and younger paddlers". But it only goes to 205cm, and I need longer. So I wrote Nelo and asked, hey can you put those plastic wings on a Braca shaft adjustable from 220 to 230cm? Yes they can. I'm waiting for price and specific options (like, can I get an ovalized shaft), but I wanted to ask the experts:
Does this frankenstein make sense for me?
I like the plastic blades, I deal with concrete ramps, shallow water with rocks, river inlets with rocks... leave the paddle every now and them on the kayak for fishing...
I weight a lot, 145kg right now, its an ongoing process and it will go down (kayaking helps :) ). These have... I think is 660cm2 surface. Weight should be around 900g, maybe a little bit less since the braca shaft should be 100% carbon. So if the price is, lets say up to 200eur (since the nelo wing costs 160 as standard)? Or it doesnt make sense?
For example for 200 I can get a Select XLINE, french made, carbon shaft with FG paddle, high angle but not wing. Weighting... around 800g it says (probably bit more in my longer setup). Not sure about what makes more sense, if the wing or high angle. I see all the "pros" fishing in surfskis in Southafrica and Australia using wing paddles so I tend to want that... but I know its for crossing the surf rather than paddling 4km and 4km back along the bay just to get out to open sea.
Any advice really appreciated! Thanks.
