Twice now since we’ve closed on the house on May 1st there is a puddle of water on the floor a few minutes after flushing this toilet. It leaks down onto the basement floor. We are suspicious that the seller DIY’d something with the plumbing between the time we got the inspection done and closing. I don’t understand where the water is coming from, since it doesn’t leak continuously it seems.

Any help is greatly appreciated ❤️

EDIT: upon further investigation, it looks like the toilet is overfilling after flushing and leaking out the side handle. We are replacing the whole assembly inside. Thank you for all of your help ;)

We are first time home buyers and we closed on the house May 1st. I’ve been working nonstop since closing so I haven’t really started actively moving anything yet.

After closing, we went to check out the house and we flushed the toilet and after a few minutes we came back and there was a puddle of water around the toilet and it was dripping into the basement. We knew that there were bathroom leaks (one under a sink, one elsewhere), but we signed in the agreement that the seller would handle it before closing. It seems like the seller might have tried to DIY something with the plumbing and messed something up to where it did that.

We also just got a brand new septic system installed. When we contacted the seller on closing day to inform them of the leak, they said they would send someone out there to look at it. They told us it was because someone had flushed paper towel in the toilet and they fixed it.

Today, the same exact leak happened again after flushing that toilet (just the flush, no paper of any kind). So apparently, this issue is NOT fixed.

I feel like an idiot for signing on the house when we didn’t go check to make sure the repairs were done correctly by a professional. What legal standing do I have here? Am I just screwed?
