Are you guys varnishing your paintings?
Ok I know it’s a banal technical question but if I ask in r/oilpainting the classical technique people will all say “duh, of course we’re varnishing”.
I make large scale oil on linen paintings. I’ve tried varnishing stuff in the past but hated the effect. My paintings are matte on purpose, matte varnish dulls the colours, satin varnish tends to go on streaky, and gloss varnish is out of the question. And with the scale I work at, it’s difficult. So I just don’t varnish.
Is this a major faux pas considering that I’m selling stuff? I try to only use lightfast pigments, considering this.
I’m too afraid to ask my local artist peers lol.
