Being a viewer of indian television since when i was 7 i have always noticed one thing that shows from 2000s and 2010s had a solid rewatch value. Look at us, we always discuss on shows of pre 2019. I havent seen a lot of people here discussing on 2020s shows. And i think this is only because majority of the shows that were made from 2020 onwards have a very very low recall value. Can you imagine the last show you watched that not just had ethereal looking lead actors but also stunning osts, pleasing cinematography, sizzling romance, charming comedy and emotional family/interpersonal relationship drama. I bet you will name a show from pre 2019. This is because nothing post 2020 has been made with passion.
Yesterday when i saw Tum Dena Saath Mera on Starplus scoring 1.1 rating at primetime 8 pm. And read a few comments on how boring and predictable the show is. I understood the problem today lies in creating a wholesome experience for a viewer. We had serials that use to get us glued within 10 seconds of a show's start. I wont name them as everyone has their own favourite. This is what is missing today.
Forget investment and targetted audience, ITV shows are not even made with the same soul how they use to be made pre 2019. The only show that had a wholesome factor in last few years according to me was Katha Ankahee. Regardless the plot, the show had a fantastic run on time. Infact the only show where every character had something to offer, there were wholesome moments, there were tearjerking scenes, there were certain visual elements that captivated us. And i havent seen anything after that with that level of energy. Anything that is made nowadays is 80% negative. Katha was a heavy dark melodrama but it also had the feel good factor. Another wholesome show for me was Zindagi Mere Ghar Aana. Absolutely beautiful. I noticed that, these two became very quickly underrated after their completion. And this is mainly because Katha got overstretched while ZMGA was ended abruptly. This in a way shows that TV broadcasters just dont care about audience like audience does to these shows. They dont care about the audiences trust. TV audiences look for a wholesome factor that keep reminding of the beautiful elements they spend with a daily soap while broadcasters care only about ratings without even thinking that ratings come from a viewer who is enough satisfied to watch their product. Heck, even a show like Anupamaa was so wholesome initially. It had such a recall value too with its daring and progressive turns and emotional bonding between the characters.
Broadcasters today need to change themselves in order to bring that wholesome factor back to ITV. Its either you do a tight-knit gripping wholesome show that will be enjoyed by current and coming generations or you rehash the same template for a couple of years and wait for a complete ITV collapse. In today's date, the only reason why we feel nostalgic about older shows is because out of 100, 70 of them are worth remembering while the 30 is what ITV is doing currently.
