Onkyo TX-NR656 Stuck in DVI Mode (RTX 4080/5070 Ti) - ALREADY RESET
Onkyo TX-NR656 Handshake Issue: Stuck in "DVI" Mode with RTX 40-series/50-series - Resets not working
I am at my limit with this Onkyo TX-NR656 and need expert input. I am running a high-end setup with an RTX 4080 and an RTX 5070 Ti, but the receiver is stuck in a legacy handshake loop. Even though I have managed to get 4K resolutions to show up in the NVIDIA Control Panel, the connector type is still stubbornly labeled as "DVI - PC display." My cable management is extremely complex, with wires zip-tied and routed through a drop ceiling, so rerouting everything is not an option.
Before suggesting the basics, please note that I have already bypassed the HDMI switch and plugged the PC directly into the receiver with no change. I have performed the official "Clear" factory reset using the CBL/SAT + ON/STANDBY combo multiple times. I have also tried a full power drain by leaving the unit unplugged for an extended period. In the NVIDIA Control Panel, I have attempted forced resolution changes and hot-swapping the HDMI cable while the system was live to force a re-detection. I also tried the BD/DVD + ON/STANDBY combo to toggle 4K Enhanced mode, but the front panel did not respond to that specific command.
The hardware is clearly capable because plugging the PC directly into the TV works perfectly as HDMI, so the Onkyo is definitely the bottleneck. It appears the HDMI board is failing to broadcast the correct HDMI identifier (EDID) and is defaulting to a legacy DVI signal instead. I have already spent hours on this and am not looking for beginner troubleshooting or "try a different cable" advice. Does anyone know a way to force this specific model's HDMI board to stop lying to the PC, or is the board officially a lost cause?
