Your landlord is literally trying to kill you with cheap aesthetics

I just finished running a full diagnostic on my "luxury" renovated unit and the results are terrifying from a structural integrity standpoint. The place looked great on the walkthrough with that grey vinyl flooring and fresh white paint but once I pulled out my multimeter and a thermal camera it became clear that the owner is a total parasite who spent all his money on masks instead of infrastructure. I started noticing a weird hum near the kitchen outlets and when I checked the panel there is zero grounding on three major circuits.

I decided to investigate further because the air felt damp and I found a massive patch of black mold hidden behind a brand new sheet of drywall in the closet. They didnt even bother treating the leak from the unit above they just covered it up with cheap gypsum and called it a day. It is a classic case of hiding a catastrophic failure under a layer of cosmetic nonsense. This is not just laziness it is a calculated risk where the landlord bets that you will move out before the house burns down or your lungs give out from the spores.

When I confronted the property manager with the sensor data and the photographic evidence of the mold he had the audacity to tell me that I was "tampering with the property" by using professional tools. He actually tried to argue that since the apartment passed a basic visual inspection I should just be happy with the aesthetic. These people view housing as a passive income stream where maintenance is an optional bug rather than a core requirement. They treat tenants like disposable components in a poorly designed machine that they never intend to oil.

I am currently drafting a formal report to the city housing authority because this level of negligence is criminal. I spent five years in mechanical engineering and I can tell you that a building with compromised electrical and systemic moisture issues is a ticking time bomb. The sheer arrogance of charging premium rent for a unit that is basically a glorified fire trap is what happens when you let middlemen control a human right. If you are renting right now do yourself a favor and buy a cheap moisture meter and an outlet tester. Do not trust the paint.

The worst part is that they probably have ten more units in this building with the exact same flaws. They wait for someone to get sick or for a short circuit to happen and then they just claim insurance and do it all over again. I told him if he doesnt have a licensed electrician here by Friday I am escrowing my rent and calling the inspectors. He looked at me like I was the one breaking the law just for demanding a circuit that wont fry my laptop or my heart.
