Character motivation for destroying something they created

In your opinion, what kind of justification could there be for something like this?

For example: one of my characters, with some assistance from the rest of my cast, developed a large-scale solution to save their village from famine. However, this plan was stolen, and he ends up developing a new plan to destroy the village altogether.

I know for a fact that this is necessary for the plot, but I'm struggling to find a good reason he would want this aside from the typical: if I can't have it, no one can. Considering he isn't supposed to be all that vengeful as a character, it doesn't quite fit. I'm curious if anyone has any advice on how to come up with a compelling justification for a situation like this.

Edit: thought I should add a little context and mention his plan was stolen by a close friend and pawned off as his own work. The character in question, Linus, had been working on this solution since he was eight (damn near 16 years by the time of the aforementioned theft) and the thief had only been involved for a little under two years.
