am I in(the)wrong/Racist?

I was called racist—

Now I was playing a game when I saw someone with a japanese name—Im learning and studying japanese for years but kept stopping and now continued studying again—so I wanted to know and get to know them but I was a bit too nervous and scared to approach them normally so I greeted and asked them whether their name is really just in hiragana or its supposed to be written with kanji (あいにか愛に?) and It took me awhile to respond when they asked what im talking about cause im still trying to figure out kanji. (Basically I had to open up my notes and app that teaches kanji to know 3 kanjis Ive never seen yet)

And they then told me that they can tell im using a translator and that Im a racist person and left— I did tell them I was studying japanese but I dont think they really read it as they seemed super duper mad. I didnt mean to come off as rude and I originally didnt wanna interact with fluent people yet but a ton of people said to interact with fluent people to be more accustomed to the language (and figured Id do it on a game I play so we at least have something in common)—

so was I really wrong and what kind of approach should I do next time? I really feel bad and wanna not make the same mistake again..
