Short and simple.
Bought an electric car.
have 125 amp main panel
Want to put a subpanel in the garage to install a level 2 charger (60amp) and a few 15-20amp outlets for the garage for my woodshop and the garage door and lights and what not. (50's house, all lighting on the main floor/garage is 2 circuits and i'd like for that to not be the case in the garage anymore)
Question: what size breaker do I need from the main panel to feed a sub with a 60 amp breaker and a few branch circuits? 60 is plenty right?
Main 240v items in the home are the AC, stove/range, and dryer. Furnace/WH are gas.
Debating whether or not to also install a larger panel in the home to create more space for the future basement remodel, since the 125amp panel in there is a tiny one and it's close to maxed out with tandems. (there is a space where the old water heater breaker is that would be the new sub breaker if I keep this panel).
I've replaced a couple panels before so none of this is scary or out of my wheelhouse, and the run to the garage is easy to access so it wont be a nightmare fishing wire.
Thanks homies.
