Low ceiling basement sauna build – help me figure out bench heights (74” ceiling, 6” beam)

Finally pulling the trigger on a sauna build I’ve been planning for a while. Going with a prefab 6x8 kit from bsaunas USA (upper + lower bench kit) and a 9kW Homecraft heater. The space is the only option I have in the house, so I’m committed to making it work despite some real constraints.
Here’s the situation:
• Ceiling height: 74” max
• Beam running down the middle of the space that drops ~6” below the ceiling, so effectively 68” of clearance in the beam zone
• Heater: 9kW Homecraft
• Users: I’m 5’10”, wife is 5’2”
I know the general rule of thumb is upper bench sitting height around 36–40” off the floor to get your head near the heat, but with a 74” ceiling that math gets tight fast — especially if I want any meaningful gap between my head and the ceiling, and even tighter under that beam.
Here’s where I’m landing and what I’d love input on:
1. Upper bench height – What’s a realistic sitting height here? I’m thinking somewhere around 36” so I’ve got ~38” above my head when seated (I’m 5’10”), which feels marginal but workable. Does that track?
2. Lower bench – At those upper bench heights, the lower bench is probably more of a step/foot rest than a true sitting bench. If that’s the case, does it make sense to reduce the depth from the standard 16” down to 12” to reclaim some floor space? Or is there still value in keeping it deeper?
3. Wife’s experience – At 5’2” she’ll have more headroom flexibility seated on the upper bench. Is there any reason to configure anything differently with her height in mind, or does optimizing for me (taller user) cover both of us?
Happy to hear from anyone who’s dealt with a low-ceiling basement build. I know it’s not ideal, but I’ve accepted the trade-offs — just want to make the best of the space. Appreciate any input!
