Ranking Every English VA For Goku

Jeffery Watson (7/10)

Jeffery Watson ıs suprisngly good. He sounds like Greg Cipes' Beastboy mixed with Ian James Corlett. Very fitting for Goku. He has a energy that make me want to hear more about his performance.

Ian James Corlett(8/10)

Ian James Corlett is in a very weird position. He ıs not bad, and he ıs deffinetly sounds the most analytical and sophisticated Goku in the list, even more than Masako Nozawa (This ıs especially the case when he fight against Vegeta. He easly owns every serious scene he ıs ın. I think he would be easly the definitive SSJ4 Goku voice ıf ever voiced him). But ı really do not think he would be a good Goku in a long run. He does not do a good job on comedic scenes. Often times he sounded very forced. Ian left when he was at top.

Peter Kelamis (10/10)

Peter Kelamis ıs basically Masako Nozawa mixed with Ian James Corlett's ups. He owns every scene he ıs ın. He ıs so naturall at comedic moments, ıt does not feel forced at the sligthest. He ıs also so good at mixing comedic moments with serious ones like Masako Nozawa. Moment of Goku hitting Recoome in the gut ıs a great example. He made me laugh at that awfull funi line. Heck, he was one of the few performances that does not sounded odd in Westwood dub of Cell Saga. He manage to make lines like "Okey dokey","Alrighty" and etc sound non-cringy. His screams, his mannerisms and etc are on point. Sure, he ıs no Sean when comes to screaming, but he ıs more than makes up for ıt. He and Stephanie Nadolny are literally only vas that gived Goku country boy energy. This alone puts him above %95 of the actors.

Sean Schmmel(9/10)

Sean Schmmel ıs a miscast in a lot of places. He should been the one who voiced Captain Ginyu instead of King Kai. And he should been the one who voiced Piccolo instead of Nail. But Goku? Its his best role. He went from Poor mans Peter Kelamis un OG dub to VIP ver of Ian James Corlett in Kai. He has every upsides of Ian without his downsides. Sure, he ıs not at the same levels of sophistication like him, but he sounds very naturall at everything else. His goofy moments sounds so naturall. He can be light hearted and serious at the same time. His screams needs no explanation. He ıs basically most serious and emotive voice Goku ever had. This ıs also why ı think he did a slightly better job as Goku Black than Masako Nozawa. Though unlike her and Peter, he not good at mixing serious moments with goofy ones, even in kai. And he sometimes feel tryhard on goofy scenes.

Kirby Morrow (8/10)

Late Kirby Morrow ıs literally same as Ian James Corlett. Copy-paste. No diffrence other than him changing his voice for Ssj2 and etc.

Steve Blum(3/10)

Steve Blum ıs a miscast. He should voiced Tenshinhan instead. That voice ıs not a good fit for Goku.

David Gasman(6/10)

David Gasman ıs a preety good Goku actually. A good mix of serious and goofy. Is he ever considered to audition for Superman? Because he actually would be hell of a great Superman with that performance.

Jemeriah Yurk(4/10)

Jeremiah Yurk, he ıs a miscast. But man, that would be the definitive Yamcha voice.

Lex Lang(8/10)

Lex Lang sounds and acts like Greg Universe from Steven Universe. He ıs like seeing a puzzle piece for a completely different puzzle fit in a spot ıt shouldn’t, but does. Why ıts a great voice for Goku?!

▲ 17 r/batman

He voiced Batman, Joker, Alfred and a lot of other characters in Black and White. Non of them sounded like eachother.

  • His Batman sounded way to close to Late Kevin Conroy's performance.
  • Same goes for his Joker and Alfred.

Its feels criminal that he does not get acknowledged more. Here, all the voices that he did.

So ı was watching this video by Laz Sempaim, a goofy recap of Death Note.

And his comments on the show make me think, "this really does sound stupid".

I reread the manga before writing this, to make sure ı know what ı am talking about.

I am not gonna sugar code this.

This ıs a full rant on Death Note's story.

Light

I have a love/hate relationship with Light. On one hand, he does the most paranoid and well-thought out plan, on the otherhand he does something super-suspecious that makes you think he is Kira. Like when he said about the news when his home was under survaliance by L.

Beign a Light fan ıs somehow more abusive than beign a Gohan fan. Atleast Gohan does not sabatoge himself (also funfact, both voiced by the same va ın eng dub, spesifically for westwood/ocean dub of dbz)

He feels so inconsistent sometimes. I get ıt, he ıs suppose to be arragont. And ı genually understand how he got the bait ın the first place. But after that? He keeps flipping from paranoid to arragont to paranoid whenever plot demands ıt.

A well executed example of arragont person beign paranoid would be Kira (eh?) from Jjba. Where he tries everything he can to stay hidden. Than his worst parts slowly start to build up until he slips. Than cycle resets again (ıt happend 2 times).

I think story could've worked ıf ıt was like this

  • Light gains a big victory.
  • Light starts to get confident again as a result.
  • Light Slips by doing something very suspicious.
  • Light becomes paranoid again.
  • Repeat.

Second issue, how his parents did not caught up to him?

I get the anime ver, where he ıs a Sociapth from the start. So the affects would be very minimal.

But the Manga ver? He has no excuse. Manga explained that he lost 10 pound and did not properly sleept for 5 day. You would think his Mother and Father start to think something is wrong with him. If they were neglecent, ı would understand. But that ıs not the case either.

Third and biggest.

Asspulls. The one that kills the immersion for me is Naoimi.

Light meet her when she was asking for L, when he entered the building. The only reason why he even go after her ıs because he heard her. If he was entered 2M later, he probably would never try to hunt her. Aftermath ıs somehow more stupid.

  • Why the security force did not check the security cameras of the Police station? You would think L ıs suspicous enough to do that for any evedince, since he already suspects Light at that point of time.
  • Aizawa went passed the two... I thought that was a anime-only scene when ı first saw ıt, like Light seeing L's ghost at the end. But ıts ın the manga as well. That scene beign there ıs not only pointless, ıts comical levels of stupid.

And the sad part ıs, Maomi adds nofthing to do story. You can remove her, and nofthing would change.

  • Light already killed FBI agents, so we already know he ıs okay with killing innocents.
  • L already suspects him.

Lastly, this one ıs more of a nitpick, Light looks mad suspicous when you removed the internal monologue (ı know ıts seconds ın universe, but the point still stands) https://youtu.be/9hEHOaZYEeE?si=5PcGshtbgl0YTNZh

L Lawliet

He ıs a walking anamoly.

Both his suspicion and trust on Light does not make any sense.

I get his first plan. Very smart move.

But what gives him the idea that Kira wont just... leave the region after that?

We never get any confirmation or evedince for him beign ready for this senario. Both ın Anime and Manga. He just assumed that Kira would stay ın the region.

Why he never think that Kira was a Hacker (which he canonically ıs)? He kills people with magical powers. Him hacking the police database sounds the least unthinkable feat here.

Honestly from their pov, Light beign set for a trap by Kira makes way more sense than him beign Kira.

SolidJJ's parody skit ıs somehow not even a parody. That ıs basically their whole dynamic.

If L keep saying things like "I want you to be Kira", how exactly ı am gonna beleive that he ıs the worlds greatest dedective? This ıs a very petty move that hurts the entire case.

His trust on him ıs not any better either.

WHY YOU DİD NOT TAKE THE NOTE BOOK FROM LİGHT?! I swear to God, L was a complete Moron when Light regained his memories.

  • Light was literally looked like he got possesed when he hold the Death Note.
  • Than he went complete %180 on a dime. From screaming to very calm.
  • Than the guy they were arresting suddenly died.

Like... do ı need to tell more? The sad part ıs that he got suspicous of Misa, again, for lesser reasons. He ıs not even beign consistent with his own logic here.

Near

I get the idea. Him and Melo are suppose to repressent 2 halfs of L.

Melo respressents is agressions while Near repressents his emotinally inteligent side.

In paper, this is a very smart idea. But only in paper.

Shortly after Mello made his introduction, he preety much blackmailed the American goverment, a Shinigami (which we will get to) and Light. He made the point very clear. He went for 12.

Near meanwhile... Key diffrences of his personality never been higlited enough. If anything, story did the worst option by higligting his similarities with L.

Much as L beign a jerk, he ıs not far from reasoning.

  • Does not want to team up? Well he swallows his pride, and teams up with them anyway. Story even justifies his decision with Kira Task Force.
  • Does something behind his team? Story justifies ıt by making him actually right. We never shown that he targets anyone outside of Light and Misa.
  • Can be a jerk to his team mates? Played out for comedic moments. He still takes advice from them and considers their pov. If he really did not cared, he would just put Light in the prison for rest of his life.

Combine that with Near's design and mannerisms, ıts a recepie for Temu-L allegations. I thought Near was his son when ı first saw him.

I am not saying he ıs a copy L. But the key differences are very subtle and practically insignificant. So ı do understand why a lot of people thinks that way. Its barelly higlited in Anime. And ıts just trivial ın the manga.

Anime did him dirty? Yes. Did Manga ver fixed all of issues with the character? No. All of them are still present.

The ending ıs still an asspull. I checked for the answers for the death note. You need to assume few key details ın order to make ıt sense.

  • "Mikami only instructed to analyse the fake one" in chapter 102. Even ıf we assume Light ONLY meant the fake note, there ıs no little reason for me to think that Mikami only stopped with that one. He knew he was beign chased. He was already beign paranoid and unhinged to begin with. This actually fits into his methodical nature.
  • "Light removed the previous pages". I do understand the appeal. But there ıs no way Light himself did not wrote any names into that Notebook during the timeskip era. Even ıf ı am beign generous by assuming he removed the names that Misa wrote (which ıs very possible), there ıs little reason for me to think that he removed the names that himself wrote. Seeing all of the names would only motivate Mikami. (Mikami not noticing few white man that entering the japenees bank with him. If he was a normal person, ı would understand. But he ıs not only paranoid, but he ıs also very unhinged.)

Also do not even start on Matsuda's theory as a defense. Not only ıts not confirmed, ıts actually hurts Near as a character.

  • Its completly goes against chapter 90, where Near said that ıts goes against L's legacy.
  • Its also makes Near's entire point as a character pointless. Build up to his confrontation of Kira, Light keep saying things like "If ıt was L, he would used ıt. You are gonna loose Near". And later, Near directly stated that he sees Death Note as a weapon for Murder, something evil. L deffinetly would use The Death Note to kill Light. But that ıs the point, Near ıs not L.

Biggest asspul for Near ıs that, why Light did not just threatened the president? He already threatened and killed one before, so why not again?

  • We saw multiple times ın the story that he ıs okay with killing others longest ıts works for his interests. L and Melo, 2 individuall that he has way more reasons to kill, personally ,than Near. I can see a defense for L, but there ıs no defense for Melo.
  • Arragonce argument also does not add up either. You can flip ıt on ıts head and take ıt as a huge power move. Light showing Near that he has strings on everything would be very de-morolizing for Near and his team.

Mikami

Why he does not carry Death Note pieces with him? I always assumed that Manga explained that via Light not telling him about the fake rules and etc, since Mikami ıs not experimental as Light. But Takada carrying page note pieces with herself preety much debunks this.

He is a lawyer. He should have small pages with him that disqued as his normal small note. Its makes less sense when you consider the other 2.

  • Light manage to keep a part with him so long. Even L did not noticed ıt.
  • Takada's page. Which caused Melo's death. Melo ıs almost smart as Near. And he ıs way more unhinged and paranoid. Like come on. If he does not notice ıt, than why should Near and others?

They wasted Late Kirby Morrow's talent on this clown.

Sidoh

He single handedly ruined the entire story for me.

  • He come to earth the moment when plot ıs very convient.
  • He ıs the one who confirmed 13 day rule beign fake to Melo, which led to Near figuring out as well. You could argue Melo would figure out himself, but you also could argue Melo would not risk his own life, and other Mafia would not let him risk theirs for his curiousty as well. Melo never considered the possiblty of "Destroying The Death Note" rule beign a fake rule, even though ıts sounds way more convient than 13 day rule. I'd say 50/50.
  • He ıs the main reason why Mello learned about Shinigamis. Which what resulted him to telling Near. You could argue that Near would learned the existince of Shinigamis in chapter 93 via Mikami. But ıf he never knew them to begin with, he would not add him to his plan. So you could argue things would go drastically diffrent. Like Near not knowing how Mikami receved the Death Note can result him seeing Mikami as just a normal fanatic and nofthing else.

Atleast with Rem, ı kinda see ıt. She ıs also a cop-out (her backstory ıs stupid). But atleast story justifies her timing. Same goes for Misa. Much as Misa beign a stupid person, her stupidty is beleivable.

The Message

The message of Death Note feels like an afterthought.

  • Its barelly there.
  • Can easly be removed by changing ONE SCENE.
  • Directly told to our face by Ryuk via flashback (that should shown ın early chapters)

A more fitting senario would just Ryuk laughing at Light's face without remorse. Which ıs exactly what happend ın Live action ver's ending. Him saying "There ıs a afterlife, you are just goin there lol" feels very ın character. He ıs just mocking Light.

I am not a nerd. And ı really have no intention to check every interview that the author made, nor ı am claiming he did not planned this, ı am just saying he fumble the bag with this one. Its the finall product that matters. Everything else ıs trivial.

A proper way to implement the message would be like this

  • Add that scene to early chapters.
  • Make sure Light start to have a crisis from ıt, since he killed few innocents before this.
  • Light finalizing his thoughts on this subject with his killing spree with FBI agents.
  • Make Light ask about the nature of Death to Ryuk. Ryuk ıs the last character on Death Note that would talk about these stuff, so ıt would be interesting conversation.

I also plan to write a post about why ı think Light-Shinigami theory ıs very good for the story and world building.

Story

Sonic meet him when Tails was getting bullied. He saved him from the bullies and both become close friends. Both were very young at the time.

Their past with Eggman were more like AOSTH. With every victory, they weakened his grip over Mobius.

Eventually both become Mobius' heroes. They even awarded by Princess/Resistance leader Amy. Giving both of them equipments and new clothes.

Events of Sonic 2 happend very similarly. Only diffrence beign that Knuckles replaced by Shadow.

Notes

  • 'Tails' ıs not a nickname. His actuall name ıs Tails Prower.
  • Tails ıs legally sibling with Sonic. This idea ıs taken from AOSTH. (Yes, this means Sonic's full name ıs become Sonic Prower).
  • Tails hates romantic shows.
  • Tails does not like Amy, like at all. Due to do her crush on Sonic. And he loves to make that part clear ın every apportunity he gets.
  • Tails ıs not a introvert. He ıs actually brutally direct and honest.
  • This ver of Tails ıs heavly inspired by Boom and AOSTH Tails'.
  • He ıs the one who came up with "Eggman" insult. He did not thinked that Ivo would make ıt his offical Nickname after Maria took "Dr. Robotnik" name.
