What are yours thoughts on minimal mismatched sets for absolute beginners?

One of my children is starting up, and wants me to come out with. I don’t want to commit to a $1000 beginner set or something like that, so have been reading up on starting out with a low club amount, and I’d rather take lessons to hit those well than have a bunch of clubs I don’t know how to effectively use. I want to be able to go to the range eventually fairly regularly, maybe do a couple of Par 3 courses and nothing more than a 9-hole within the next year or so.

Here’s what I’ve come up with, based of raiding eBay, marketplace and 2nd swing (I’m in Canada, so options are limited)

- Driver (RBZ 10.5, $110)
- Hybrid (Ping Rapture 5H, $60)
- 7i (Ping G730, $80)
- Wedge (Mack Daddy 2, $60)
- Putter (Ping G2, had this one kicking around the house)

If I learn those well, and then add as needed once I can hit them decently (I don’t need/care for matching sets, maybe I’ll just single-buy the irons one at a time or something) is this an ok setup for my goals or am I glaringly missing something?
