any tips on NOT topping the ball with your iron and hitting ground balls?

I just started about 6 weeks ago and have been hitting the course about twice a week. I have been using old Hogan Magnum irons from the 1980s that my pops gave me a while back. I was wondering what the best tips would be to stop hitting stinkers with my irons leading the ball to roll on the ground and not pop up in the air? I came from playing baseball my whole life , almost 30 and 6'2 if that matters.

I have some Nike Sumo SQ irons on the way since my Hogans are so old I thought I'd get something a little better to help me start off

Pop's gave me a set of these Hogan Magnums when I started golfing a month ago. I never knew how old they were until I recently looked them up, haha. Definitely in the market for some new (to me) irons. Can't complain about free irons though!

I have started golfing about a month or two ago and I am currently using very old hand-me-down Hogan irons. I am wanting to buy a new (to me) iron set, trying to spend around $300 maybe $400 on a new set. Are these a solid first buy? Sidenote: My buddy offered to sell his 2019 Titleist AP1 712's irons for $500, but I'm not too about those as well.
