Can someone please simplify the uses of ‘se’ for me? I think I have the hang of it and then something else arises to confuse me further!

For example, ‘se veía venir‘ apparently means ‘I saw it coming’ but i’m confused by the use of ‘se’ in this context. Would it not be ‘lo veía venir’?
