[Meta Trope] Fanservice that ends up being hated by the fans
I feel the title is somewhat self-explanatory, but I'll explain anyhow. When something in a media is included specifically as a nod to fans of a series, but is executed in a way that just leaves fans annoyed or insulted.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - Chewie's Medal
Honestly, most of this movie could probably fit, but the most egregious example of fanservice is Chewbacca getting his medal. Many fans pointed out in a New Hope, only Han Solo and Luke get medals for destroying the Death Star, while Chewbacca doesn't get anything even though he's standing along with them. The movie addresses this by finally giving him his medal, but the reference rings hollow due to how 'corporate' the movie feels, rolling back nearly every major change from the previous movie to play it safe, and feeling more like a reference compilation than an actual movie.
Devil May Cry (Netflix) - Vergil Chair
A popular meme in Devil May Cry is Vergil's lawnchair, specifically from a mod that replaces Vergil's chair he summons with a standard lawnchair. The new season of Devil May Cry references this in a pretty blatant way by having a character summon the exact same chair from the meme. However, to a lot of fans this just felt like tourism because of how the show handled Vergil himself: >!with the most controversial aspects being Vergil serving Mundus willingly rather than essentially being enslaved to him, having the form he was took in the games while he was a mind-slave acting as a power up, and calling their mom 'weak' for dying when his motivation stems from not being strong enough to protect her.!<Even official merchandise of the show doesn't even spell Vergil's name correctly (spelled as Virgil instead).
Yakuza Kiwami 3 - >!Mine Survived!<
Spoilers for the game: >!Recently, the Yakuza games have had a lot of criticism for two things: bringing back dead characters, and the Daidoji faction. TLDR; the Daidoji are basically an organization that discretely pushes the agenda of a political party in Japan, and effectively act as a spy group. They've also got the reputation of only existing to revive previously deceased characters. In the original game of Yakuza 3, Mine, the final boss, sacrifices himself to try and right his wrongs by throwing himself and a gun-weilding mercenary off the roof of a skyscraper. In the remake, Yakuza Kiwami 3, it's revealed he survived by... falling into a foot-high bush. He was then recruited by the Daidoji, and now presumably operates as one of their agents. This is mainly hated by fans due to the absurd explanation as to how Mine survived the fall, but also another tie-in with the Daidoji, which many fans don't generally like from overexposure and being too goofy to take seriously.!<
