I’ve recently encountered an issue with my HP 6500 E710a. I’ve always purchased genuine HP ink cartridges but was recently forced to buy an aftermarket one because it seems HP discontinued selling 920 ink. My black HP 920XL cartridge suddenly stopped working two weeks ago, even though the printer displayed it as half full. I then had to search for a compatible aftermarket cartridge on Amazon. I was able to print in color, but the black still would not print. Today, the printhead does not slide to the center to present itself, and it states there is a paper jam when there is no paper jam.

Is there anything I can do to roll back the firmware? Is that even possible for my particular model? It seems there hasn’t been a firmware release (from what I can see) for quite some time, but I’m not sure what HP has done behind the scenes. I think my real dilemma is that even if I were to locate genuine 920 ink, the printhead is no longer sliding to the center to present itself. I also received error code: 0xc19a0013 Ink System Failure.

HP’s support site shows firmware SYM2FN1206AR, released in May 2012, which I attempted to download, but it is 32-bit and will not work on macOS Tahoe.

Has anyone successfully rolled back firmware on the E710a (if that’s even the issue)? If so, what steps did you take? Planned obsolescence should be illegal.
