I am currently relatively low on the totem pole, but a job came up much higher that I qualify for technically, though I assume I won't actually get as it's several steps above me

It's a small university and a totally different department. Do I need to mention to my boss? Will HR and the director of the other department keep my application quiet or possibly mention it to my boss? I have no doubts on their professionalism, just unsure what norms are for this (i.e. will they reach out to him as my reference for example since they already know him personally).

My boss would likely be happy for me, but I don't want to embarrass myself, or put my job in jeopardy if this doesn't play out
