Chennai to Mumbai usually costs 25k inr plus gst, this is a sector I travel frequently, I’ve noticed that on sundays the flight is always a bit empty which translates to cheaper fares too, on this day premium economy was available at 6k inr inclusive of all charges….took it since I’ve never flown in premium economy and when I reached the check-in area they were selling business class upgrades for 5k inr (all 8 business class seats were available), chose to take it (my first business class experience yet). So my total cost was 11k inr for a seat that goes for 25k inr.

Honestly liked the product but I got curious on how I got to fly it at almost 50% discount to normal rates which seemed unlikely….then looking down the plane I noticed that economy was around 75-80% filled and there were only 2 folks in premium economy and 2 in business (both of us took an upgrade). It goes to show how Indian market is still a price sensitive market and the airline is resorting to sell unsold premium seats at dirt cheap prices last minute to make the best out of it due to high costs. Makes me question if premium economy is in itself a viable product or not, given people how want cheaper fares stick to economy and those who can spend may choose Business class seats.

Nevertheless, highly recommend folks in this community to keep an eye out for such upgrades whenever you fly to enjoy these products at affordable rates!!
