Trondheim wasn’t supposed to become a hyperfixation

A few days ago, I posted here asking for recommendations for my first-ever trip to Norway while visiting Trondheim for my brother’s NTNU graduation.

Since then, I’ve somehow ended up reading about NTNU, maritime tech, energy systems, public infrastructure, research funding, and why Trondheim seems to punch absurdly above its weight for a city its size.

I’m an Indian financial journalist (formerly a lawyer), and now I’m weirdly fascinated by Trondheim — not just as a beautiful city, but as a research and innovation ecosystem.

While I’m there in July, I’d love to meet:

- students and researchers

- engineers and startup folks

- people working in energy/maritime/tech

- international residents

- or honestly anyone with strong opinions about Trondheim and Norway

I’m especially curious about:

- how NTNU influences the city

- startup/research culture

- university-industry collaboration

- why Norway seems to do certain things exceptionally well

- what outsiders usually misunderstand about Trondheim

Happy to grab coffee or beer and talk.

As someone visiting Norway for the first time, I suspect half my assumptions are wrong already, which is exactly why I’m interested.

Feel free to DM or comment!

Indian financial journalist visiting NTNU — curious about Trondheim’s innovation ecosystem

Hi everyone,

I’ll be in Trondheim in July for my brother’s graduation at NTNU, and I’m hoping to understand the city beyond the usual “student town” description.

I’m an Indian financial journalist (formerly a lawyer) and I’m especially interested in how Trondheim and NTNU fit into Norway’s larger research, energy, maritime and innovation story. From the outside, the city seems to punch far above its weight in technology and industrial research, and I’d love to learn more while I’m there.

I’d be very interested in speaking with:

- students and PhDs

- researchers

- startup founders

- engineers

- people working in energy/maritime/deep-tech

- international students

- or honestly anyone with interesting perspectives on Trondheim and NTNU

Particularly curious about:

- university-industry collaboration

- research commercialisation

- startup culture around NTNU

- Norway’s approach to innovation and public investment

- how international talent experiences Norway

Happy to grab coffee and chat if anyone’s around during July. Feel free to comment or DM.

Thanks!

Will Work for Trondheim Travel Tips and Cinnamon Buns

Hi everyone!

I’m visiting Trondheim in July for about two weeks and thought I’d introduce myself here. I’m coming from Mumbai to attend my cousin’s PhD graduation at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, but I also want to explore the city, meet locals, and experience everyday life in and around Trondheim.

A little about me (30, M) — I’m a lawyer turned financial journalist from India. I enjoy long conversations, coffee walks, history, politics, finance, nature, and discovering places that don’t usually show up in tourist guides. I’d love to meet people for:

-walks around the city

-hikes or fjord trips nearby

-cheap eats / student-friendly cafés

-museums, bookstores, or pubs

-day trips around Trøndelag

- or just hanging out and exploring

I’m travelling on a budget, so I’m especially interested in affordable/free things to do, public transport tips, hostel/student-budget food spots, and low-cost ways to see nature around Trondheim.

If anyone’s up for showing me around, grabbing coffee, or sharing recommendations, feel free to comment or send me a message. Looking forward to experiencing Trondheim beyond the usual tourist stuff :)
