Supplies Sent to Cuba for Convoy in March

Intro:

Hi. A post about Natalie’s words about the Cuba convoy caused a discussion on the amount of aid. EDIT: Thanks Mod Bardfinn for linking that!

I did some research. I couldn‘t find detailed receipts/statements but many organizations do year end and reporting and maybe this expenditure will be represented there. There should be one big list by PI though if they’d like to show the fruits of the effort instead of making people scour the web. For those us of who want to follow up out of curiosity or accountability reasons this is important.

Research:

Statement from organizations involved:

The People’s Forum has been fundraising for a year and have brought over “half a million dollars of solar panels to Cuba” as the AP reports. They have other organizations they say they’re working with like The Hatuey Project and PSL. There’s an amount raised linked below.

Global Health Partners was one of the the aid organizations. I found some statements from them but it looks like they often fundraiser for Cuban hospitals. Here’s a snippet from a Nation Article:

“Code Pink chartered a plane for 100 people to join the convoy. When they got to Havana, they fanned out to neighborhoods to help paint a playground and visit an elders home, among other activities with Havana residents.

The cargo hold of Code Pink’s charter bore 6,300 pounds of medical supplies worth $433,000, shipped by Global Health Partners. “We’ve been through crises in Cuba before but there’s something significantly different in this moment,” said Bob Schwartz, executive director of the health nonprofit.”

So maybe CodePinks money went into chartering and GHP‘s went into the supplies.

It’s possible skepticism is warranted because of the associations to organizations that aren’t normally aid workers (this isn’t WFP for example). Maybe GHP does though. Possibly they have a good amount of infrastructure in place to help make this happen.
