Send registered mail to US

I can't believe I have to ask Reddit about this. I need to send a bank draft to someone in the US. Since it's a draft I didn't want to send by regular mail.

I just assumed I bring it to a Canada Post office and ask to send by registered mail, I give them the address, they put it in an envelope, charge me and give me a tracking number.

Lady at the desk says I must use some XPressPost app. I've been on CP's site about how to use XpressPost and get to "guides" where every link is broken and links to calculate shipping cost and only give me the regular mail postage rate.

Is it really this hard to send one piece of paper over the border? I'm sure I did this once before right at Canada Post, I don't want to download and learn an app for something I might do once a year. Did I just get a lazy/incompetent employee?

As an alternative I started filling in a Fedex pickup, but this person lives in a remote area outside of regular US mail service, and the estimate was around $160. He has a PO Box for mail pickup in town, but I assume Fedex and couriers don't deliver to PO boxes.
