question about trinacria symbol
hey there! this question is specifically for the sicilians in this group but also everyone who wabts to share their opinion!
pls excuse me writing in english, i understand italian well enough but cannot really speak/write fluently or anything close enough to express myself efficiently.
i am half sicilian half german and grew up in and live in germany. however i spent my childhood summers in sicily and still feel very connected to my roots. i am also lesbian and out of the closet for over 10 years i believe.
i tried to find out by asking my aunt about the trinacria symbol currently used as a political dogwhistle or not. but she is not very political aka maybe a bit conservative.
i wanted to know if wearing a trinacria on a shirt/tattoo/as jewellery is recognized as patriotic or more right wing or is it also used by progressive/left/queer people as a cultural symbol?
because the gorgone head as far as i know can be a feminist symbol in some contexts too. also the meaning of the three legs as far as i found out sounded pretty timeless and humanistic.
but my concerns are:
will i be misunderstood in the lgbt bubble in sicily if i would have such a tattoo? how do you react to people entering queer spaces with a trinacria
and: i am still hesitating because the angle of the legs might be perceived as too similar to the nazi swastika so if i get it as a tattoo i would probably create a design a bit more abstracted.
and: are there any very specific italian or sicilian stories or symbols that represent queerness or lesbians? aside from the internationally known symbols like scissors etc.
thank you in advance!
edit: maybe i should add that the german flag apart from sports worn or used by an individual is pretty much making clear that you are dealing with someone on the conservative and even more right wing patriotic side. someone using a german flag in a comment section or being proud of being „a german“ is 99% a neo nazi. I believe no other country has such a broken relationship to their national flag. so i would never have a german flag anywhere on me because right now it is very much signaling anti-queer anti-feminist pro-conservative values here in germany. that is why my concern about a cultural/national symbol is so big. but anyways i like how it looks and i like the mythology behind the trinacria
